The Goldeck Panoramic Road is located in the Zlan-Stockenboi Region, part of the Austrian state of Carinthia. It is considered to be one of the most beautiful and scenic drives in Austria due to its spectacular views of the surrounding Julian and Carnic Alps, a quick succession of steep curves and no less than 10 impressive hairpin bends.
The amazing Goldeck Panoramic Road (German: Goldeck Panoramastraße) is a favorite among drivers of vintage cars, convertibles and motorcyclists, who have no problem with the moderate gradient of 10%.
The Goldeck Panoramastraße represents the best mix of driving and hiking fun. It’s open from the beginning of May to the middle/end of October, daily from 8.30 AM to 5 PM. Also, another important thing to remember is that the Goldeck was built as a panoramic road and as a result, you will have to pay a toll fee for the passage.
Starting from the toll booth located in Zlan, part of the municipality of Stockenboi in the Lower Drava Valley, the drive is 15.3 km long and will take around half an hour in order to reach the highest point.
Leaving Zlan behind, the narrow mountain road will take you through a thick forest that soon gives way to beautiful, pristine pastures, while the field of vision is dominated by the imposing alpine summits.
The picturesque Goldeck Road leads to the “Seetal” car park at an altitude of 1.895 m above the sea level, the end point of this amazing drive. In the surrounding area there are plenty of tourist attractions to choose from: the Goldeck Cable Car, the Museum of the Early Middle Ages “Carantana” or the Folk Culture Museum, to name just a few.
The “Seetal” has a viewpoint with a particularly beautiful panorama. It is also the starting point of many hiking trails and mountain tours, all perfectly suited for families. Here you will find a couple of charming mountain inns where you can rest or admire the fantastic scenery while enjoying delicious Carinthian culinary specialties.
