Il Muro di Sormano (The Sormano Wall), the hardest cycling path in the world.
It is located in Sormano, in the so-called Larian Triangle in the province of Como, Italy.

Abandoned for years, from 1963 to 2006, it has now been resurfaced.
Closed to traffic, it really can be defined as the hardest bike path in the world: a climb without respite, ‘’semplicemente bestiale’’ (simply awesome) as Ercole Baldini defined it.Ercole Baldini established the climbing record with 9 ‘and 40” in 1942.

The Muro di Sormano is famously associated with the Giro di Lombardia, a one-day race which featured the climb three times from 1960−1962.
After its restoration, the climb returned to the route during the 2012 edition. It was placed about 80 km from the finish of the race and before the less brutal and better known Madonna del Ghisallo climb.

From Muro di Sormano to Osservatorio Astronomico Sormano

The road of Muro di Sormano starts a few hundred meters after the village of Sormano and goes up to the Osservatorio Astronomico.
After a short descent and a bridge over a stream begins the climb that winds for about 1,700 meters over a drop of 280 meters (827 m initial fees, the final 1107 m). It has an average gradient of 17% and peaks of up to 25%.
The road is very narrow and goes up in the woods.
There are four turns. All along the climb, a series of written messages on asphalt indicates, meter by meter, the elevation, so that the rider can always know where he is and how close he is to complete the climb.

Other messages on the asphalt are famous phrases from great cyclists, such as Gino Bartali.
The only consolation is that the climb is “only” 1.7 km long.
The route ends at Osservatorio Astronomico Sormano on the Tivano plan.
